Today in God’s Word
Numbers 22; Psalms 62-63; Isaiah 11-12; James 5
In James 5 we are encouraged to not chase after riches and self indulgence, but to be patient. James gives the example of the farmer who waits patiently for the crops to come by the growth that God gives in his timing.
“7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” (James 5:7–8, ESV)
May we heed this direction from God and be blessed in our doing (Jas 1:25)! May we fix our attention not upon the riches of this world and upon our selfish desires, but let us look to the coming of the LORD and our bodily redemption (Rom 8:23). Let us ask God to establish our hearts (1 Thess 3:12-13) by granting us love for one another. We are called to establish our hearts…but God establishes our hearts! We need not strive in our own strength for something that requires waiting in silence (Ps 63:5). Like David in Psalm 63 today, let us take refuge in God by seeking our satisfaction in him, knowing that nothing life can offer and nothing death can take away is more valuable that the steadfast love of the LORD (Ps 63:3)!
Soli Deo Gloria!
