Today in God’s Word
2 Samuel 2; 1 Corinthians 13; Ezekiel 11; Psalm 50
Today Paul unpacks love in 1 Corinthians 13.
Here is one spiritual give that all believers have. To have Christ is to have love. All spiritual gifts combined do not amount to the love that should rule the life of a child of God. Paul set out to balance what he has been saying about spiritual gifts. He does not want an elitism that puffs up, but a sense of loving service to one another.
Romans 5:5 tells us that our hope does not fail because the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. The very love of the Father for the Son and the Son for the Father indwells us (cf. John 17:26)! The Spirit of God that unites all members of the body of Christ, the universal church of God, resides in us who trust Christ. Romans 8:16 says that he bears witness to our Spirit that we are children of God. John 13:35 says that the world will recognize us as followers of Jesus because of our love for one another. Jesus commands us to love one another as he has loved us. Romans 12:10 tells us to love one another and outdo one another in showing honor. Peter tells us to love one another earnestly, from a pure heart. John tells us that the commandment of God is that we believe in the name of his Son and that we love one another. John also tells us that the one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Jesus told us to love our neighbor as ourselves only after loving God with all our heart. Love is to be the key principle and the main characteristic of our lives!
O God let all our exercises of gifts and let all our efforts of discipline and let all our striving be in love and not in a self-love, but in a grateful love toward you and a sacrificial love toward one another. Let us pour ourselves out for the lost and the needy and the afflicted. Let us love with the very love that you have for your Son O God…fill us with your Spirit.
Soli Deo Gloria!
