Today in God’s Word
Genesis 4; Matthew 4
In today’s reading I see a useful correlation to Cain’s situation and what the Psalmist speaks of in Psalm 4:3-5. It seems that this message of Psalm 4 was the answer for Cain…and for us when we find ourselves angry and empty and when we feel like we need to fight for our rights or interests. This is when sin is crouching at our door.
I believe there is a lesson here that I can honor God, rather than shame him, when I call upon him for self control and then reflect upon my motives and desires before reacting in anger toward anyone or anything. I will sacrifice my rights and surrender my honor for the sake of his honor. In this I know he has set me apart for himself and I will trust him by silently pondering my heart and knowing that he answers my call in time of need.
Perhaps sin may have been crouching at the door for Adam and Eve after Abel’s death as they considered their situation…perhaps they could have reacted in distrust and self reliance. By the grace of God we see Adam and Eve continue in faith and love and holiness. It seems they have not given up on the promised offspring that would bruise the head of the serpent and they may doubt that Cain could be the one through whom he will come. Eve, seeking to replace her righteous offspring, gives birth to another son and this is the one through whom the curse upon the serpent and the promise to mankind will be realized…Seth is the replacement and salvation indeed has come through childbearing (1 Tim 2:15)!
Soli Deo Gloria!
