Today in God’s Word
Genesis 13; Matthew 12
In Matthew 12 Jesus speaks in a couple of ways about true Godliness as he faces the Pharisees and their challenges of his righteousness. Jesus faults them for not knowing what it means for God to “desire mercy, and not sacrifice”. The quotation here is from Hosea 6:6 and the Hebrew word that ends up appearing here in the English quotation as “mercy” is Hesed, which is usually translated as “steadfast love” and it indicates a faithful devotion and commitment that is the underlying power of covenant.
Faithfulness and devotion to God is true religion, not empty religious duties done to make-up for the lack of this devotion. Jesus points out that helping others in need is not a violation of the Sabbath…the Sabbath is not to be an excuse to avoid doing good. His use of the divided house and the fruit tree are variations of this theme that true religion is consistent and comes from within and it recognizes the Spirit of God.
May we not deny the Spirit of God his rightful home in our bodies but may we invite him that he would indeed be the strong man to drive out wickedness and to empower us to live faithfully unto God and to be a brother and sister and mother to Jesus.
Soli Deo Gloria!
