Today in God’s Word
Exodus 27; John 6
There is one food that does not run out. There is one food of which we cannot eat enough. There is one food that sustains infinitely. There is one food that gives life.
Jesus speaks in a hard manner to the Jews in John 6 and he gets serious about the motives of those who are coming to him. At the beginning of the chapter the crowds are seeking him for his signs. By the middle of the chapter the crowds were drunk with excitement and they were hunting him for his food. By the end of the chapter the crowds were not converted…they were gone. The crowd could not handle his offensive words and his disciples even recognized that it was a hard saying to tell people to eat his body and drink his blood if they were to have life.
All life comes from the Father. Jesus tells us that the living Father sent him and that even Jesus lives because of the Father (cf. John 6:57). Now we can only have true life, eternal life, if we partake of the Son who has been given to us. Just as the Israelites were sustained in the desert by manna from heaven so we are to be sustained by the Son of God during this life.
Let us abide in the word. Let us abide in Christ. Let us dine upon the flesh and the blood. Let us be sustained by the Son to the glory of the Father. Let us find no greater satisfaction than to abide in the Son. Let us eat to live and live to eat.
Soli Deo Gloria!
