From Today in God’s Word
2 Samuel 8-9; 2 Corinthians 2
In today’s reading Paul speaks of those who are sincerely laboring to share the gospel message being “the aroma of Christ to God”. There is a sense here where we see two sides of this aroma. We know God is well pleased with the life and sacrifice of his Son and this sacrifice has an aroma that goes on and on in his people who walk as living sacrifices (Rom 12:1). Yet there is also an evangelistic sense here whereby those who hear the message are drawn by the fragrance of the knowledge of God. Both seem to hinge on our sincerity.
What kind of aroma is our life toward God? Is it the aroma of Christ or the aroma of morality? Is it the aroma of Christ or the aroma of legalism? Is it the aroma of Christ or the aroma of empty ritual? Do we have a sincere faith from a new heart that longs for God?
What kind of fragrance is our life toward those around us? Is it the fragrance of the knowledge of God or the fragrance of emotional appeal? Is it the fragrance of unconditional promise that lacks warning and a call to repentance and faith? Is it the fragrance of warning alone that lacks the promises of reconciliation to God? Is it the fragrance of a full gospel that has changed our hearts and has transformed our purpose in this life, bringing us unto communion with God for his glory and our great joy?
May our lives be a fragrant aroma unto God and unto all those around us!
Soli Deo Gloria!
