From Today in God’s Word
Gen 47; Luke 1:1-38; Job 13; 1 Cor 1
In 1 Corinthians Paul begins to address divisions by establishing the divine nature of our salvation. He separates himself from the work of God in us that brings us to become part of the church of God, sanctified in Christ Jesus. From v 18-31 he makes a case that we were chosen and called by God and thus it is not the work of man that convinces us to believe or empowers us to repent.
Only those who repent and believe upon Christ are reconciled unto God but this does not come from our wisdom or power. Thanks be to God that he overcomes our weakness and our folly and that because of God we are now in Christ Jesus (1 Cor 1:30)! We cannot boast of our faith or our ability.
And Paul makes it evident that the word of the cross can be stripped of power when we appeal to others with the wisdom of the world, as if we can convince them to be saved apart from the work of God upon them to give them life and sight and hearing. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of Christ- The untarnished gospel of a the very Son of God, sent by the Father as our crucified and risen savior for the forgiveness of sins to those who repent and believe is the message everyone needs.
Let us rejoice in God and let us give the gospel message of Christ crucified to everyone far and wide knowing that it will be folly to many but because of God’s work upon hearts, to some Christ will be the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Soli Deo Gloria!
