God’s Design for Family Discipleship
The LORD has given parents the responsibility of teaching our children all of God’s commands and statutes. This is described well in Deuteronomy 6:1-9 where we find what is arguably the most important verse in Judaism, known as the Shema…
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4, ESV)
We are to teach are children all that God has revealed about himself and we are to train them to know him exclusively as the one true and living God, who brought the Israelites out of captivity. By our own teaching our children should know that the LORD is a righteous God and a savior (cf. Isaiah 45:21) and that he is worthy of our deepest love with all that we are. We are instructed to use the interactions of our daily routine as opportunities to educate our children in the words of our great God and King to this end…that they would love him with all their heart, soul, and might.
